Read previewThe S&P 500's 22% tear over the last few months may just be getting started, according to Sevens Report Research, a market research firm with clients that include top Wall Street banks like JPMorgan, Morgan Stanley, UBS, and more. On the valuations front, the S&P 500's multiple would only have to rise fairly slightly to lift the index to 6,000. "The S&P 500 is already trading with an elevated forward P/E multiple of over 20X expected 2024 EPS," he said. "If sentiment gets frothy, however, and stocks trade with a multiple pushing 22X, which is far from unheard of as the forward multiple of the S&P 500 hit 21.4 on 1/2/2022, then the S&P 500 could surpass 6,000 in H2'24." Essaye also said small-cap stocks cyclical sectors like big banks, and materials and transportation firms would do well in a soft-landing scenario.

This week's question: What's a good price to get into a stock that has moved up a lot? For example, what's the better value: ABC stock at $100 or XYZ stock at $50? If you only focused on the increase in stock price, you missed the more important point: The stock was actually a better value after the rally. The stock price, however, is higher now than it was in April. This week's question: What's a good price to get into a stock that has moved up a lot?

This momentum is turning into bookings, and that gives me the confidence that our annual revenue growth will continue to accelerate moving forward." These bullish comments — taken together — made the softer fiscal second quarter guide all the more puzzling. But for now, we're chalking up the revenue growth softness to some lumpiness around one quarter to the next. Guidance Oracle's weaker-than-expected fiscal 2024 second quarter guide caused shares to drop a second leg lower after the closing bell Monday. Within that figure, Oracle expects cloud revenue to increase 29% to 31%, which at the midpoint is about stable from the first quarter.

This particular conversation has been chewed over pretty thoroughly, and I've hit on it last week and the week before . And perhaps more relevant, last week saw at least tentative signs of a desired broadening out. It's worth pointing out too that the recent surge in the familiar Nasdaq megacaps has a lot to do with mean reversion, after the Nasdaq lagged the equal-weighted S & P 500 in 2002 by 20 percentage points. The NDX has been in a long-term structural uptrend relative to the S & P 500 for the past decade. As noted, the S & P 500 touched 4,200 late in the week before easing back a bit.

Lockheed Martin can return to growth this year as the outlook for the defense sector strengthens, providing a "meaningful" opportunity for earnings to surprise to the upside, according to Credit Suisse. Deuschle also raised his target price to $510 from $427, which implies shares could rise 11% from the stock's closing price on Monday. Lower volumes of its anti-missile system THAAD also could weigh on growth as could the possibility of reduced defense department budgets. Still, Credit Suisse anticipates a growth could be more bullish than what the company's latest guidance suggests, given its backlog and the possibility of supply chain improvements. Deuschle said that based on past earnings data patterns, the company's 11% backlog growth in 2022 foreshadows revenue growth in 2023.
The firm's principals are generally on the boards of half of ValueAct's core portfolio positions and have had 55 public company board seats over 22 years. Adding Morfit to the board of Salesforce makes a ton of sense regardless of the activist environment. Morfit has experience helping management increase both growth and margins from a board level, and both can be improved at Salesforce. The looming question is whether he will initially be doing this with an activist cloud hanging over the company's head in the form of a proxy fight by one of the other activists involved. It likely had been engaging with Salesforce management for several months, and this appointment may have happened just as a threatened proxy fight was reported.

The S&P 500 is down 16% on the year as the Fed tightens policy to fight inflation. The S&P 500 fell as much as 25% this year as the Federal Reserve pulled its support for the US economy. To return to normal valuation levels, the market would have to fall 58% further from where it sits currently, he said. The most bearish strategists among major Wall Street institutions see the S&P 500 falling to around the 3,000, about -25% assuming a recession plays out. He's more bearish than Wilson in the short term, however, with a three-month price target of 3,600 for the S&P 500.

While U.S. customer traffic was down in the quarter, management noted that it improved sequentially and improved throughout the quarter. Speaking to the inventory glut at full-price retailers, TJX management said on their post-earnings call, "The marketplace is absolutely loaded with quality branded merchandise across good, better and best brands." Full-year 2022 guidance was in-line with the updated outlook provided at the health insurer's September investor day. But we did get some commentary looking ahead to 2023 that pushed the stock 2% higher in Wednesday's down market. The Q3 benefits expense ratio in the quarter was 86.5%, down (again, lower is better), down from 88.1% in the year ago period. The Q3 benefits expense ratio in the quarter saw significant improvement, falling to 78.7% from 86.4% last year. Outlook Management affirmed their adjusted full-year 2022 EPS outlook of approximately $25 per share, representing 21% annual growth versus 2021 an in-line with expectations.
Starboard views Salesforce as a high quality and sticky business at an attractive valuation with the potential for significant value creation through a better balance of growth and profitability. Salesforce peers are operating at a "rule of 50" – average revenue growth plus adjusted operating margins of peers equals 49.4. Salesforce currently has a revenue growth rate of 17.0% and 20.4% operating margins, which brings it to 37.4 combined. Starboard has had extensive experience with growth companies that begin to see slowing growth rates and need to either regain that growth and/or focus on margins. Even if they were to hit that target, this would only bring them to a growth + margin of 42.
